Madison Police say a convicted burglar with a significant criminal history is back behind bars thanks to an alert citizen.

A woman spotted a man prying open a door leading to an office suite in the 100 block of First St. Tuesday night.

She called police, who arrived just as the intruder was getting into a minivan.

Officers found cash likely stolen during the burglary. They also impounded the van to search it. A look inside revealed a variety of tools, electronics, wallets, a crack pipe and other items.

Police arrested 60-year-old Jeff Joe for burglary and a parole violation.

There was also a 64-year-old Fitchburg man inside the van at the time of the crime. He told officers he was drunk and unaware of the burglary.
