CrimeTracker 15: Man Suspected in Attempted Copper Wire Thefts

Incident Date: 12/07/2012 - 8:38 AM

Address: 6021 University Ave. (Cress Funeral Home)

Suspect(s): Male, white, 50's, 5'10", average build, wearing a white hard hat, blue jeans, a dark hoodie with an emblem on the left side and white tennis shoes.

Details: A construction worker called for police after a suspicious man, in a white hardhat, showed up at a University Ave. job site and began eyeballing electrical wiring. It is earmarked for use in the remodeling project ongoing at the Cress Funeral Home, 6021 University Ave. The construction worker had never seen the man in the white hard hat before, and inquired about his presence. The stranger claimed to be an electrician, but could produce no identification. He said his name was "Tom Schmidt."

He left in a green Chrysler convertible with a tan top. The MPD received another report involving a similarly described man, driving the same type of vehicle, had attempted to steal copper wiring from the west side Menards just prior to the man in the white hard hat showing up at the funeral home site.
