VIDEO REPORT: CrimeTracker 15: Madison Police Investigating Home Burglaries

UPDATED: Wednesday, August 22, 2012 --- 10:00 p.m.

It's a trend that Captain Victor Wahl with the Madison police department says has been on the rise for a couple of months.

“We've had a number of residential burglaries or attempted burglaries,” says Wahl.

Since mid-June, 26 burglaries were reported in sector 120 which is the area south of Highway PD and west of Maple Grove Rd.

On Tuesday morning, seven of those 26 burglaries occurred in the Glacier Crossing Neighborhood.

Those in the neighborhood are taking turns keeping an eye on the area.

One man even handed out surveillance cameras to neighbors.

Madison police posted the following information on its website:
One tactic being used by criminals is to access vehicles parked in driveways or streets. Not only are they stealing items from them, but they're using garage door openers to try to enter homes by checking to see if doors into homes -from garages - are unlocked. Residents are urged to keep all doors locked and to consider bringing garage door openers inside at night.

All the police can do is fill out the crime report after it happens. For them to stop these crimes, they'd have to be present all the time... 24x7... watching the entire neighborhood.
