CrimeTracker 15: Neighbor Alerts Police After Spotting Burglar

Posted Monday, November 26, 2012 --- 11:47 a.m.

Incident Report from the Madison Police Department:

Incident Type: Residential Burglary

Incident Date: 11/25/2012 - 6:28 AM

Address: 200 block Division St. & 100 block Dunning St.

Arrested: Christopher W. Kirkland, age 27, Madison
Mr. Kirkland was arrested for Burglary and Carrying a Concealed Weapon.

Victim: Female, age 33, Madison
Female, age 79, Madison

Details: A Dunning St. resident, concerned that her older neighbor's home was about to be burglarized early Sunday morning, raised a window and yelled at a stranger who was attempting to enter the backdoor of the 79-year old victim's home. The neighbor wanted to know what the man was doing. He said he was looking for someone, and gave a name that meant nothing to the woman. She told him he was in the wrong place and best leave. He peddled off on a bicycle.

A responding officer found the backdoor to the victim's home open and she slept inside. Based on the description provided by her alert neighbor, police were able to stop the suspect. He had a folding knife in a pocket, with the blade extended. He was also in possession of electronics, including a Kindle Fire, and some cash.

He claimed the Kindle was his, but had a hard time explaining why - when the officer turned it on - the electronic device is registered to a 33-year old woman who lives on Division St. He tried to say she was a "friend of a friend." But the MPD would determine the Kindle had actually been stolen from the victim's home in a burglary that occurred shortly before the attempted home invasion on Dunning St.

The 33-year old said the Kindle and cash were both missing from a bag she had left in the kitchen. It appears doors to both targeted homes had been left unlocked. The bicycle the suspect was riding is an 18-speed woman's bike. It could not be immediately determined who owns it.
