CrimeTracker 15: UW Police Arrest Man for Stealing Bicycles

POSTED: Wednesday, November 28, 2012 --- 12:25 p.m.

From the UW-Madison Police Department:

Officers from the UW–Madison Police Department arrested Ryan J Loughrin, of Madison, in connection with bicycles thefts from campus.

Loughrin admitted to investigators that he had stolen bicycles from the UW–Madison Campus and that he focused on bicycles that were secured with cable locks. Loughrin sold these bicycles on Craigslist.
Loughrin was booked into the Dane County Jail for theft and charges are being requested from the Dane County DA’s Office. This investigation is continuing and additional charges may be forthcoming.

The UW–Madison Police Department wants to remind the community to use proper crime prevention techniques when securing valuables. According to Sgt. Aaron Chapin, “If you have a bicycle, make sure you lock it using a quality ‘U-Lock’ style lock. Place the lock on the bicycle securing the front wheel and the frame of the bicycle to an approved bike rack.”

Thieves frequently use Craigslist and other internet sites to sell their stolen items. If you choose to purchase an item from Craigslist, make sure to obtain the serial number from the seller along with a contract from the seller to help protect you from fraud.
