CrimeTracker 15: Vehicle Break-Ins in Southeast Dane County

UPDATED: Friday, August 3, 2012 -- 6:30 p.m.

More than ten car break-ins overnight in Sun Prairie are just the latest in a string of thefts in eastern Dane County.

In the Golden Meadows neighborhood near Target in Sun Prairie, thieves broke windows and broke into trunks to take anything from athletic gear to electronics.

"My roommate actually had about $700 of stereo equipment stolen from his car," said James Kerr. "The guy broke right through the window, went in through my car, popped the trunk, and took my golf clubs right out of the back."

The Dane County Sheriff's Department is also tracking at least eight car thefts in the Towns of Blooming Grove, Dunn, and Pleasant Springs. They speculate the same group may be responsible for many of the incidents because of their geographical proximity.

From the Dane County Sheriff’s Office:

Madison, WI. August 3, 2012 – The Dane County Sheriff’s Office wants to alert citizens to a series of vehicle break-ins that have been occurring in the southeast part of the county.

On July 21st, two vehicles were targeted on Storck Road in the town of Blooming Grove. Then, from July 23rd to 25th, six more vehicles were broken into in the towns of Dunn and Pleasant Springs. Most of the items taken included cash and electronic devices.

The Sheriff’s Office urges everyone to lock their vehicles and remove or secure valuables such as iPods and GPS units. Outdoor lighting such as motion lights can also help to deter thieves looking for an easy target. Anyone with information on these crimes is asked to call the Dane County tip line at (608) 284-6900. Law Enforcement also asks that residents be aware of the goings-on in their neighborhood, and report any suspicious activity immediately.

Last Sunday 7/29/12 the thieves tried to steal my 97 Honda they put it in the ditch in front of my house and got it stuck. They did manage to steal my 97 dodge plow truck that had about a gallon of gas in it and a lot of tools they took the keys out of my wife's car and the keys from the Honda they tried to steal. Yes I know I shouldn't have left the key's in it. I also had the manager at Mobil in Westport check his video to see if any one came in to get gas from 1:00 am to 6:00 am. No luck I hope that they find these people that are doing this. I know times are hard but this doesn't make it any easier on the working person.
