Details: A Madison cab driver needed 6 stitches to his head following an attack yesterday afternoon. His assailant was later arrested by Dane County Sheriff's deputies while driving a stolen van. The 48-year old Badger Cab driver told police he believed the suspect was also trying to steal his cab. He had just finished fueling the vehicle at the company's Cottage Grove Rd. facility when the suspect approached, asking for the time. The cab driver provided the information, and was about to get back into the driver's seat, when he was struck in the head. He was able to jump into the car. The suspect twice ordered him to get back out. By this time the driver was radioing for help and the suspect fled on a bicycle.

A Dane County Sheriff's Department press release picks up the rest of the story:

At approximately 1:42 pm on Wednesday, February 15th, Dane County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a stolen vehicle in the town of Dunn.

The victim, a Frontier Telephone employee, was outside working on a telephone box at the intersection of CTH AB and CTH MN, when a man approached him on a bicycle. The man struck up a conversation with the worker by asking him for directions. He then jumped into the Frontier employee’s van and drove away.

A passerby picked up the victim, and the two began following the stolen van while on the telephone with the 911 communicator. Deputies located the van and made a traffic stop at CTH AB and Buckeye Road in the City of Madison.

Denzel E. Brown, age 21 of Chicago, was arrested for Operating a Motor Vehicle Without Owner’s Consent. He was also issued a citation for Operating a Motor Vehicle Without a Driver’s License. Brown was also wanted by Madison Police for a previous incident where he severely battered a cab driver. The charge of Substantial Battery was added when Brown was booked into the Dane County Jail.
