Details: A Madison man used tracking software to find his stolen iPad Sunday afternoon, and his detective work led to the arrest of a suspect who admits to being an opiate addict. Found with the iPad were two wallets, both believed to have been stolen from cars that were parked on Sylvan Ave.

The iPad owner said his electronic device was also in his vehicle, and he believes it was stolen while his wife ran errands on the west side Sunday morning. The tracking software got him to the 400 block of Shepard Terrace, which is when he called police. An officer said because of accuracy discrepancies she would not be able to knock on every door in the neighborhood in an attempt to find the iPad, but she did indicate she knew of a potential suspect who sometimes stays in a particular residence. He is someone she knew from past contacts and arrests with opiate dependencies. The officer tried, but could get no one to come to the door, and the iPad owner said he would stay in the area and continue to case the place.

A short time later, a resident of the home came outside and the victim pleaded his case. This led to the suspect coming out and returning the iPad. The victim noticed there were two wallets in a bag with the iPad. They were not his. He called for the officer to return. The suspect came up with a story about how he found the stolen items in a nearby park. He was arrested for theft.
