VIDEO REPORT: New Construction Is Target of Recent Burglaries

UPDATED: Wednesday, July 18, 2012 --- 6:15 p.m.

Tonight the Dane County Sheriff's Office is warning people about burglaries targeting homes under construction.

Thieves are taking so much they're slowing down projects and frustrating homeowners.

We're talking about 3 different houses in 2 days.

Contractors are frustrated because they're wiring homes for the second time.

Electrician Jeff Fullmer says, "All the work went to nothing, had to start all over again."

When thieves hit a Town of Windsor home on Stepping Stone Circle they took it all.

On every wall and around every corner copper wires are cut. Huge amounts were ripped out and stolen.

Fullmer says, "We were looking at finalizing it tomorrow but, it's bad, it's bad."

Electricians were basically done with the job and today had to tell the homeowners it would be a while.

Homeowner Brook Hanson says, "When you're building your home this is the last thing you want to hear."

Three homes have been burglarized in the last two days and they're all within a few miles of each other.

Sheriff's Office PIO Elise Schaffer says, "It certainly sounds like these are connected."

It's likely thieves are after the copper to cash it in for money. They're also stealing tools and equipment like extension cords, radios, saws and compressors.

Looking to make buck thieves are doing damage to innocent homeowners and hitting contractors twice with lost product and wasted work.

Hanson says, "We came to see our house this afternoon to see how they're doing with the electrical and it's really frustrating."

Wt this point the Sheriff's Office is asking for anyone with information to come forward because they want to catch these people before it happens to someone else.

If you have any information on the thefts you're asked to call the Dane County tip line at 608-284-6900.
