CrimeTracker 15: Thieves Looking for Unlocked Vehicles

Posted Thursday, February 16, 2012 --- 11:21 a.m.

Information from MPD's West District:

Is your vehicle locked at night?

Within the last couple of days an officer working our night shift followed two sets of prints through the snow in the Country Grove neighborhood...it appeared as though two suspects checked at least 100 cars for unlocked doors. A citizen living in this neighborhood also reported seeing the same thing in another area. While we have asked our night shift officers to provide extra attention to this area, we ask all of you to also do everything you can to make sure you don't become a victim of theft.

Please do not leave your car unlocked outside and please do not leave any valuables visible inside of your car (MP3 players, GPS devices, purses, wallets, cash, etc). Also, never leave your vehicle keys inside of your car with the doors unlocked.

I had odd footprints in the snow going from the sidewalk, through my yard to my fence gates and back. They were sneakers with an X in the tread pattern. Probably checking to see if the gates were locked (they are). Don't just lock your cars... lock your doors and make sure valuables aren't within view outside your house.
