Dane County Authorities Stumped by Similar Shootings

UPDATED: Tuesday, January 8, 2012 --- 7:30 p.m.

Several similar shootings in Dane County are stumping law enforcement still without any suspects.

Beginning in late December, several businesses and homes have been shot on the east side of the county. In Madison, a construction site on Agriculture Dr. was damaged, as well as a home on O'Brien Court and a Chase Bank nearby on Milwaukee St. Another home in Sun Prairie was damaged on New Year's Day while the family was inside.

"We're a little scared when you walk in and have gunshots through the doors," said Craig Ball of Electrical Solutions, Inc. in the Town of Pleasant Springs near Stoughton. On Friday he arrived at work to find bullets through a window and garage door that ricocheted near offices inside.

So far there are no injuries, but there are also few leads. Investigators told Ball they do not suspect a drive-by shooter because of the close cluster of bullet holes. He says .22 caliber casings were recovered from his driveway.

Most of the incidents are occurring overnight, but law enforcement are concerned someone could get hit.

"It was just really luck that kept anybody from being hurt," said Dane County Sheriff's Department Spokesperson Elise Schaffer about the Sun Prairie shooting. "If these continue the potential for somebody being injured or possibly even killed is a little concerning."

From the Dane County Sheriff's Office:

Madison, WI. January 8, 2013 – The Dane County Sheriff’s Office is investigating two random shootings and believes additional similar incidents in the county may be connected. No one has been injured in any of the shootings, but detectives want to find those responsible before that changes.

The first shooting was reported on January 1st at about 9:30 am. Homeowners in the 3300 block of Bailey Road in the town of Sun Prairie woke to discover bullet holes in their home. Several rounds hit the house, which is believed to have occurred while the family slept. Then, on January 4th, a business owner in the 2900 block of CTH MN in the town of Pleasant Springs reported a similar incident. He arrived at work in the morning to find several bullet holes in his building.

Detectives are working with other law enforcement agencies, including Madison Police, to investigate whether similar incidents reported in their jurisdictions may be connected. All of the shootings have occurred in the overnight hours between midnight and 5:00 am.

Anyone with information on these incidents is asked to call the Dane County tip line at (608) 284-6900, or tips can also be left electronically via our website at danesheriff.com. All tipsters may remain anonymous.

Maybe using bullets to test for security systems? As a way to case for robbery?
