Madison, WI. October 18, 2012 – On Wednesday, October 17th, the Dane County Sheriff’s Office took part in a national effort to arrest persons with outstanding family violence warrants.
The 10th Annual Family Violence Apprehension Detail includes approximately 115 county sheriff’s offices, police departments, probation departments, and community agencies from 22 states. Agencies served outstanding arrest warrants with charges ranging from harassment to homicide. This is the sixth year the Dane County Sheriff’s Office has participated in the program, which originated in Clackamas County in Oregon in 2002.
The Dane County Sheriff’s Office had nine deputies dedicated to the enforcement at various times of the day yesterday. Those deputies made 78 attempts to locate individuals with outstanding warrants, and three arrests were made.
• Wang Vang, age 28 of Sun Prairie – Disorderly Conduct and Battery with the domestic enhancer.
• William C. Crossland, age 31 of Dane – 2 counts of Disorderly Conduct with the domestic enhancer.
• Todd D. Finkler, age 53 of Sun Prairie – Physical Abuse of a Child (new arrest).
This collaborative effort, commonly known as the SWEEP, helps raise awareness of the problem of domestic violence in our communities. It also demonstrates to offenders that they will be held accountable for their violence. In addition to the above-mentioned arrests, eight other people were booked into the Dane County Jail on domestic related charges by other local law enforcement agencies.
Domestic Violence is an issue that affects everyone. One-third of all referrals to the Dane County District Attorney’s Office by law enforcement are domestic related. In addition, each year between three and ten million children in the U.S. are exposed to domestic violence in their homes.
The Dane County Sheriff’s Office recognizes the urgency of this social problem, and designates resources not only during Domestic Violence Awareness month, but throughout the year. Some of the efforts include devoting detectives to follow-up on all domestic related calls for service, working collaboratively with other community organizations such as Domestic Abuse Intervention Services (DAIS), and providing victims with safety information and other resources.
