Release from Rock County Sheriff's Office:
On 05/29/12 Rock County Deputies responded to 11634 Nelson Street in Milton Township for a death investigation. When deputies arrived they located Chad E. Sprague 03/13/71 deceased in his garage. Sprague had died from an apparent suicide. Deputies entered the residence to check for any other possible victims. While checking the basement, Deputies located a large amount of explosive material that was being used to manufacture fireworks. It appeared that homemade “commercial grade” fireworks were being manufactured in the basement. Deputies exited the house and secured it. The Winnebago County Illinois Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad was contacted and they responded to the scene.
Milton Fire and EMS were contacted and responded to the scene to standby while the Bomb Squad personnel removed the explosive material from the house. The Bomb Squad personnel advised that some of the powder explosives were highly volatile. They did not recommend transporting the material any further then necessary. After all the material was loaded into their containers, they transported the material to the Rock County Pit on Newville Road.
Janesville Fire and EMS were called to standby while the Bomb Squad disposed of the explosive powder by setting 6 separate charges to destroy the explosive powder. There was approximately 18 pounds of material to dispose of at the pit. When the charges were detonated, the explosions could be heard throughout the area. All of the volatile powder was destroyed at the pit. The remaining firework material was taken by the Bomb Squad to be destroyed at their facility in Winnebago County.
There were no injuries or property damaged during the removal and disposal of the explosive material.
