UW-Madison Police say a former UW-Madison employee has been charged with felony theft for embezzling $144,642 from UW SWAP (Surplus With a Purpose).

Officers say 42-year-old Sonja Dedrick of Verona was a senior accountant with SWAP.

In late September, SWAP employees noticed about $45,000 missing from accounts. That triggered a broader audit, and led to the discovery of the larger amount being stolen.

Police say Dedrick admitted she stole the money over the last year to pay bills. All of the money has since been recovered.

Right now, there is a review of accounting practices at SWAP.
