UPDATE: Madison Playground Fire Result of Prom Prank

UPDATED Friday, May 10, 2013 --- 10:36 a.m.

Madison police say they've identified a 17-year-old suspect in a playground fire.

Officers say the teen admitted to causing the damage at the playground at Randall Elementary School. He says a fireworks-related prom prank caused the fire.

Police say the suspect was remorseful and apologetic to investigators about the damage he caused.

There are no charges at this time, and the teen was not arrested. Officers will meet with the Dane County District Attorney's Office to discuss appropriate charges and a resolution for this case.

Madison Police and Firefighters are releasing new details in a playground fire that they call suspicious.

The fire happened shortly after midnight on May 2nd at a playground in the 1800 block of Regent Street (Randall Elementary School). Crews arrived to find an approximately 50 by 30 foot fire.

After extinguishing the fire, crews found the world “PROM” spelled out in burned material. They also found a firework container believed to be the remains of a mortar shell.

Residents are asked to call Crimestoppers at 608-266-6014 with any information about the fire.
