4700 Cottage Grove Rd.
Female, age 30, Madison
Suspect was arrested for Neglecting a Child - 3 counts.
Male, age 6
Male, age 5
Female, age 2
At first, a 39-year-old Cottage Grove woman thought the dark figure that had darted into busy Cottage Grove Rd. Friday evening was a dog. She slowed, put her hazard lights on, and realized it was not someone's pet, but someone's child who was in the roadway.
It was “a little girl," she told an officer and she was with two older brothers, one of whom had his 2-year old sister by the arm as he tried to "get her out of the road."
She asked the children where their parents were, and warned them to stay out of the busy thoroughfare.
Meanwhile, a second concerned motorist, who said she had “hit my brakes to miss hitting her (the 2-year old)” had stopped and was giving the oldest boy, age 6, her coat and shoes as he wore neither in the 45-degree air.
The 41-year old Madison woman waited with the children for 10-minutes hoping to locate a parent.
When none was found, she called 911. It took a Madison Police officer another 45-minutes to find the children's mother.
She was in a nearby apartment building drinking alcohol with a friend.
The mother told the officer she "must have lost track of time."
She was arrested for child neglect.
Dane County Human Services was contacted and the children were eventually given to a trusted relative.
