UPDATE: Madison Police Arrest Suspected iPhone Thief

UPDATED Thursday, May 16, 2013 --- 11:48 a.m.

Madison Police have arrested a man they believe to be involved in a series of iPhone thefts.

Officers arrested 18-year-old Malcolm Whiteside Wednesday morning around 11:25 a.m.

Officers received information that a person matching the iPhone thief's description was on a Metro bus. A Madison Police captain stopped the bus near the intersection of S. Mills St. and Fahrenbrook Ct., and took Whiteside into custody.

Whiteside was arrested on one count of Theft from Person, but more tentative charges are likely.

Madison Police are asking the public for help after three iPhone thefts on Madison Metro buses.

Officers are looking for a young thief who they believe targets women seated near the rear door of the bus. He waits for the bus to stop, and when the rear door opens he makes his move.

The cases all happened near the west side. A 30-year-old woman had her iPhone stolen near the intersection of Regent and N. Midvale on April 12. A 23-year-old woman had her phone taken on University Avenue on April 19. The thief also stole from a 19-year-old woman on Science Dr. on April 26.

Police describe the suspect as: Male, black, teens to early 20's, 5'6" to 5'8", 150 pounds.
