Incident Report from the Madison Police Department:
Incident Type: Battery
Incident Date: 01/08/2013 - 1:54 PM
Address: 1000 block W. Johnson St.
Suspect(s): Male, possibly black or Hispanic, 5'8" to 5'10", stocky build, 40's, dark eyes, light mustache, wearing a tan jacket and a white knit hat.
Victim: Female, age 20, Madison
Details: A 20-year old downtown resident was punched in the face by a stranger she encountered on the sidewalk Tuesday afternoon. The victim was walking in the 1000 block of W. Johnson St. and her soon-to-be assailant was traveling in the opposite direction. As their paths met, she veered to the right to pass. The man responded by moving back into her path.
She moved to the left, and began what she described as an awkward kind of "dance,” the type people sometimes engage in when they try to avoid a sidewalk collision. In the moment, she made eye contact with the man and smiled. He, without saying a word, punched her in the face.
The victim was "stunned" and continued to walk home to call police. When an officer arrived, a puffy bruise below her eye was beginning to turn blue. She provided a description her assailant, and it is listed above.
