Madison police are searching for a suspect in four nearby weekend burglaries.

Early Saturday morning, electronics, credit cards and cash were stolen from three apartments and one home in the same area near University Ave. on Harvey St. and Barlow St. In each instance the victims were asleep and someone snuck in through an unlocked door or window.

"They propped the door open with bricks," said Karolina Johnson, whose purse was taken after 4 a.m. "They hadn't come very far into the house, they just took my watch, the important papers, the charge cards and driver's license."

Johnson says someone tried to buy gas with her credit card. Victims down the street have a similar story.

"The screen was out of the window," said Edward Leonard, who woke up to find his wallet, keys and a backpack gone. "Our landlord changed all our locks. Now we're going to just hope that we keep the shades shut, we keep the windows locked and they don't come in again."

The thief also tried to use credit cards taken from Leonard and one of his roommates at a gas station.

Johnson says her street is typically safe and she has not experienced anything like the burglary in 12 years. Leonard says his bicycle was stolen from his backyard three weeks ago.
