Madison Police say criminals pretending to be with Madison Gas and Electric are continuing to try to extort money from area businesses.
On August 20th, a Williamson St. shop owner called police after getting a phone call from people with Indian accents.
They claimed she needed to pay a $798.98 security deposit to replace an electric meter. If she didn't, she was told her service would be disconnected.
She knew this was a scam and called police. She had been given a phone number to contact by the scammers: 608-721-0610.
