Madison Police say witnesses and surveillance video helped lead officers to a robbery suspect early Sunday morning.
Police say the robber entered the Kelley Williamson Mobil in the 2600 block of Shopko Drive just after 1:00 a.m.
He kept his hand in a pocket, and the clerk thought he may have a gun. No weapon was ever seen or displayed.
The robber ran away, but witnesses saw him get into a getaway van. The witnesses were able to provide good descriptions of both the suspect and the van.
Officers also used surveillance images to get the van's license plate numbers. This led police to the home of 52-year-old John Lawton.
Lawton reportedly confessed to the crime. He told police he had already spent the robbery money on drugs.
Police say he did not have a gun in his pocket, it was a pair of scissors.
