Madison Police arrest two men and one woman, after a gas station clerk tried to stop a pair of shoplifters Thursday night.

Police arrested 23-year-old Eric Clay of Waupun and 21-year-old Devon Fletcher for battery and retail theft. While 36-year-old Katherine Hays-Podolak was arrested for disorderly conduct.

It all started when the two male suspects entered a BP gas station on the 4200 block of E. Washington Ave., stole beef jerky, a sandwich and cigarettes and then left. The 29-year-old clerk of the store ran after them, demanding that they return the items, but the two suspects charged the clerk and beat him to the ground.

The clerk later gave a description of the men and police later spotted them going into a Motel 6, on the 1700 block of Thierer Rd. They were unregistered at the hotel and were arrested in their room. A woman, who was with them, was also taken into custody after she began yelling and swearing in a hallway, disturbing guests.
