Madison Police arrested a man Thursday who allegedly stole money from a homeless woman's purse.

The crime happened around 8:30 that morning at the Bethel Lutheran Church on Wisconsin Ave.

The woman was getting some breakfast when a man grabbed her purse, took her money and ran away.

Police say the woman does not have a job, and was devastated because the money meant a lot to her.

Officers responded and looked at surveillance video. They spotted the thief wearing a distinctive knit cap in the video. An alert went out to other agencies, including the Madison Public Library.

Library staff at the W. Mifflin St. location spotted a man wearing a matching hat that afternoon. Officers responded and corralled the man after he tried to make a run for it.

Police arrested 37-year-old Terrance Thomas for theft and an outstanding warrant out of Milwaukee County.
