A woman claiming to be a man's wife managed to get into his hotel room and steal a number of items, all while the man slept inside.
A Swedish man was in Madison over the weekend for a conference. He met a Madison woman and had a couple of drinks with her Saturday night at a downtown bar.
He eventually left and went to bed in his Concourse Hotel room.
Police say before sunrise Sunday, the woman he was talking to had convinced hotel staff that she was the man's wife, and she had been locked out of “their” room.
Officers say she pulled it off by pretending to talk with the victim from the lobby phone. The one-sided call took place after an employee had tried to call the room to verify the story with the man.
The woman was let into his room, and stole his electronics, passport, wallet and duffel bag.
The man slept through the entire thing, including the call from hotel staff and the burglary.
Madison Police have identified a suspect through surveillance video, but they have not found her yet.
