Rock Co. Chase Ends With Suspect Arrested In Shower

Posted: Sunday, January 20, 2013 -- 12:36 a.m.

Information from the Rock County Sheriff's Department:

Authorities arrested a man Saturday night after a high-speed chase that ended in a shower stall at an empty home in Rock County.

On Saturday, 01/19/13 at 1732 hours, a deputy from the Rock County Sheriff’s Office observed a blue, 1992 Chevy Caprice northbound on S. CTH D near W. Bass Creek Road, in Rock Township, with license plates that did not belong on the vehicle. The deputy initiated a traffic stop and the vehicle turned east onto W. Bass Creek Road and came to a stop.

A few seconds later, the driver of the vehicle accelerated eastbound on W. Bass Creek Road reaching speeds up to 70 MPH with the deputy in pursuit. After traveling approximately one mile from the initial stop, the Caprice failed to negotiate the curve on S. Duggan Road, approximately .3 of a mile south of W. Bass Creek Road. The vehicle exited the east shoulder of S. Duggan Road, struck a tree, spun around and came to rest facing the opposite direction. The black male driver was ejected from the vehicle during the crash and fled from the scene on foot.

Several deputies and officers from the City and Town of Beloit responded to the area to search for the suspect. A K-9 from the City of Beloit tracked the suspect to a residential area on W. Bass Creek Road and along the bank of the Rock River. During the search of the vehicle, a cell phone was located wedged in the dashboard. Deputies used that phone to call 911, which allowed them to find out who the phone belonged to and any addresses associated with it.

The cell phone was linked to a female, with prior police contacts at 2906B W. Bass Creek Road. On arrival, deputies made contact with a neighbor, who advised the residence at 2906B has been vacant since the beginning of December. In checking the area around the residence at 2906B, deputies discovered a kitchen door on the backside of the premises standing wide open. Deputies entered the residence where they located the suspect, identified as Rodney T. Moore, age 36, of Milwaukee, hiding in the bathroom, seated in a stand up shower with a space heater running. Moore later admitted he used to stay at that residence with his ex-girlfriend, whom the cell phone belonged to.

Moore was taken into custody and Fire/EMS personnel from the Town of Beloit transported him to Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center in Janesville. Moore was treated and released and later transported to the Rock County Jail, where he was arrested on charges of Operating a Motor Vehicle without Owner’s Consent, Fleeing, Reckless Driving, Hit and Run, Failure to Notify Police of an Accident, Operating Under the Influence of a Controlled Substance, Operating While Suspended, Operating After Registration Suspension, Operating without Insurance, Mandatory Seatbelts Required, Criminal Trespass to Dwelling and Criminal Damage to Property. Moore was also arrested on six outstanding warrants through the Beloit Police Department and a Parole Violation through Wisconsin Department of Corrections.

Moore was held in custody pending an initial appearance in Jail Court on 01/21/13 at 1500 hours.
