Scam could cost Madison Copps store more than $15,000

Posted Friday, May 30, 2014 --- 2:58 p.m.

Madison Police say an employee at the Copps grocery store on McKee Rd. was duped by a phone scam artist and the store could be out more than $15,000.

A woman convinced the employee that she was calling from the corporate office on Wednesday. The criminal said there was a recall on some reloadable gift cards.

The caller told the employee to load $500 on each of the 30 Reloadit cards, and then scratch off the card numbers. Those numbers were given to the criminal. Somehow, this was all supposed to be part of the corporate recall process.

A Copps security staff member told police similar calls were made to other Copps stores but the scammers were not successful.

Copps' managers are trying to deactivate the cards, but it is not clear if that is going to work.
