Incident Type: Residential Burglary

Incident Date: 04/07/2013 - 2:15 AM

Address: 505 N. Frances St. (Statesider)

Suspect(s): Male, black, 6', slender build, facial scruff, wearing a red jacket with dark sleeves and a red baseball style hat.

Details: A suspicious man signed in at the front desk of a downtown apartment building early Sunday morning and told a clerk that he was there to visit a friend. Instead, he ended up entering unlocked rooms of several women. One 18-year old resident awoke to find the stranger in her bed. She was not harmed and ordered him out. Another woman was accosted on an elevator, and touched inappropriately by the intruder. In several instances, he made lewd comments to women he encountered. A 19-year old woman later realized money had been taken from her wallet. The man has not yet been identified. The MPD provided apartment building management with suggestions on how to better screen guests.

UPDATE: Tuesday afternoon, the MPD arrested a suspect for the Statesider crimes. He is Stephen L. Burton, age 18, Madison. There are surveillance cameras inside the apartment building, and captured images helped detectives identify a suspect. Mr. Burton was taken into custody on a probation hold, but the MPD will be pursuing a number of tentative charges including 4th Degree Sexual Assault, Burglary and Disorderly Conduct. Mr. Burton has been the focus of past MPD Incident Reports.
