Madison Police say a thief crashed a car while trying to steal it, leaving it too damaged to drive.

The crime happened Tuesday afternoon at 1:49 at the Mobil at 4601 Verona Rd.

A Fitchburg woman left her car running while she went inside to prepay for gas. While in line she saw the thief getting into her car.

She ran out to try and stop him. He put the car in reverse and gunned the engine.

The woman was not hit by the car, but fell and hit her head.

The thief ended up careening into a delivery truck while in reverse.

He sped off with the car but only made it a short distance before bailing out and leaving it in the middle of Britta Parkway. The rear-end of the car was so badly damaged that it was no longer drivable.

Police describe the thief as: Male, Hispanic, mid-20's, medium height and weight, wearing a dark hoodie.
