Where is you child going to go to school this fall? That's what the Madison Metropolitan School District is trying to figure out.

Thursday night, district administrators released a 50 page proposal about possible boundary changes for Madison schools.

In all, there are 13 options that will be considered.

They want to redraw boundary lines to address overcrowding in some schools and declining enrollment in others, and want to meet the needs of new neighborhoods that are popping up.

One of the most drastic options looks at closing four schools. In that scenario, Black Hawk Middle School along with Emerson, Lakeview, and Lindbergh Elementary schools would all close their doors, and students would be bussed to nearby schools.

In putting together all of the options, key factors were considered, like keeping bus routes under 45 minutes, avoiding high concentrations of low income students in one school, and trying to keep historically defined neighborhoods together.

“It is extremely difficult and heart wrenching so I as a superintendent its something I don't really want to do but its something we have to do to make sure that each child has the best building and environment that they can go to school in,” says Superintendent Art Rainwater.

“We would ask parents to please give us feedback we fully expect that well be doing some adjustments to any of our plans and that we need to hear from the public,” says Chief of Staff Mary Gulbrandsen.

The Board of Education will review options on Monday. A decision is expected in April.
