Underground Fires Knockout Power in Downtown Madison

Video will be available shortly.

For the second time in one day, hundreds of people spent Monday night in the dark after a second mechanical fire in downtown Madison.

Crews from Madison Gas & Electricbegan manually shutting off power around 8:30 p.m. in the areas around State Street. Madison fire officials say a few people were trapped in elevators during the outage. Crews were able to restore power to customers by 10:35 p.m.

The power also went out a little before 3:00 Monday afternoon in the same area. Most of the area had power restored just after 5:00 p.m

Officials say they believe both outages were caused by a fire under the street near Henry Street and State Street.

Smoke from the afternoon fire reportedly drifted into several businesses in the area. But no injuries are reported.

The outages also caused traffic headaches for downtown travelers.

Fire investigators will look into the cause on Tuesday.
