Property Tax Bill Heads to Governor's Desk

Video will be available shortly.

A Republican property tax freeze is now on its way to Gov. Doyle's desk.

The state Senate voted to approve their version of the freeze Tuesday by a 20 to 13 vote. But the freeze is likely to be on its way back to the legislature with a big veto stamp on it.

Gov. Doyle wants a freeze, but he says the Republican's plan will gut funding for schools and municipalities. His plan, on the other hand, fully funds schools.

“I told them I'll veto this because there's not a dime for education. It would kill the schools of this state. I'll veto that and I'll tell them to get back to work, and get back to work with me in a way that I've laid out a path by which we can fund education and freeze property taxes."

Doyle has indicated he would veto this plan all week.

But Republican leaders refused to admit the obvious and are still hoping he'll sign their freeze into law.

Majority Leader, Senator Dale Schultz says, "I don't know what the Governor is going to do. I can take him at his word that he wants to work with us and he cares about property taxes. Today (Tuesday), without a lot of vitriolic rhetoric on our parts we've gotten the job done."

Doyle says he hopes the legislature will implement his version of the freeze when they work on the budget this spring.
