Madison Pool Fundraising Deadline Tuesday

The fundraising deadline for Madison's first public swimming pool is Tuesday, and the Mayor's office tells NBC 15 they are moving ahead with plans for a pool big enough for 1,000 swimmers.

It's not known exactly how much of the $500,000 needed still needs to be raised, but city officials say they'll give the architect the greenlight this week to move ahead with plans for a bigger pool.

Tuesday night, the Common Council is expected to vote on a plan introduced by the Mayor last week that would allow the city to use taxpayer money if needed, essentially buying more time for fundraising.

Pool committee members say private gifts from residents now total more than $120,000.

“Those are those $10 checks that people have just been so generous. They are giving from their hearts and they are giving for their kids and they are putting notes on the envelopes with the checks and that's what makes it so heartwarming,” says Madison Parks Superintendent Jim Morgan.

City officials are expected to make a major announcement, when they update the community on fundraising efforts Tuesday morning.

Ground needs to be broken on the pool at Goodman Park by July first.
