Members of the Madison area community give their fondest farewells to one of the city's strongest civil rights advocates.
A full–house comprised of friends, family, and well–wishers gathered at Madison's Memorial High School gymnasium this afternoon at a memorial service for the man who was billed as a champion of the underdog, Mr. Eugene Parks.
Affectionately known as Gene, the orator and writer died unexpectedly last Monday about a month before his 58th birthday.
Parks was a former LaFollette High School graduate who went on to become Madison's first African American city council member as well as the city's first general election mayoral candidate.
Parks is survived by his five children… two sisters… and a host of extended family members.
