The next time you download music or a movie from the Internet, remember that the state wants its cut.
Gov. Jim Doyle's budget proposal includes $3.2 million in revenue from an Internet sales tax.
Republicans say the money would come from a sales tax on downloads for iPods and computers.
The Co–chairman of the joint finance committee, Rep. Dean Kaufert says he's not even sure if the state will ever be able to collect that money. "Trying to throw numbers on potential sales is going to leave us in a vulnerable state down the road where if those numbers don't transpire we're going to be raising taxes or figuring ways to plug those holes."
Republicans also criticize the proposal as a tax increase.
Gov. Doyle promised to balance the budget without raising taxes.
