Wisconsin to Host Two PGA Championships & Ryder Cup

MADISON (NBC15) The Whistling Straits golf course will be a busy place for big name golf over the next 15 years.

Whistling Straits hosted the 86th PGA championship last summer. Now the PGA says it will be back.

PGA officials announced Monday the Pete Dye designed course north of Sheboygan will host the PGA in 2010 and 2015. It will also host the Ryder Cup in 2020. That has tourism officials smiling about the potential for economic impact, and what it means for Wisconsin's image.

"Now we're kind of a big league golf state," says Wisconsin Tourism Secretary Jim Holperin. "It's like having another professional team here in Wisconsin and that's good for our image as a sports state."

Holperin says sporting events like golf tournaments and marathons help bring stability to the state's travel and hospitality market. By the way, the PGA championship last year meant $75 million in economic impact to the state.
