The fact police believe this St. Raphael fire is an arson is weighing heavily on the community as well as the Madison Diocese.
Friday people stopped at the church, some took pictures and paid their respects. Many were saddened and surprised to learn police had a suspect in custody for arson.
Bishop Robert Morlino held a news conference late Friday afternoon.
He praised the Madison Fire and Police departments for their work, and he expressed concern for suspect, William Connell.
I gather his mental capacity is in question," Morlino told reporters. 'So I forgive him, I'm praying for him, and at an appropriate moment I would want to go and visit him.
According to Monsignor Paul Swain, the suspect had stayed at area shelters in the past, but he was not sure if he had ever stayed at Saint Raphael's Cathedral.
