20 years after he began his work as a Semi-Skilled Highway Worker for Dane County's Highway Department, Doug Rothwell says he continues to see more garbage, and more people throwing garbage, along area highways.
He explains, "We fill up bins and bins full of trash that we pick up, it's unbelievable."
Rothwell says he wants the roads to be clean, but adds, the work can be degrading.
"I don't know why they don't have pride and why they'd wanna look around and see all this garbage on the side."
Rothwell says he and just one other crew member can fill up as many as 20 bags in a five-hour shift. He says the windy, wet weather makes things more difficult, but he adds that's not his primary concern.
"Sometimes you're traveling on the side of the road, you're not watching about traffic and you never know when a car might slide off the road and you would never even know what was going on if that happened."
We're very proud of our employees and the hard work they do, but those efforts wouldn't be as difficult if people took a little bit more care in what they do.
