Madison: For some people the debate over declaring feral cats in Wisconsin an unprotected species was based on emotion rather than science.

The issue turned into a debate over hunting pet kittens. And despite statewide approval of the measure, both the Governor and the Assembly Speaker declared the hunting season was not going to happen.

"I don't think Wisconsin should become known as a state where we shoot cats. I don't think this has been good for the state to be held up on newspapers all across the country for this," says Gov. Jim Doyle.

"The sportsmen I know, there's no interest in dealing with cats. We hunt deer as you can tell," says Rep. John Gard (R-Peshtigo).

The threat of a cat season died quickly, but the national attention lives on. The first product geared towards the Wisconsin cat hunter has hit the market.

Ken Forster lives in Fairbanks, Alaska. "We came up with the idea of an Unofficial Wisconsin Domestic Cat Call."

It's a gag gift, designed to make light of a delicate situation. Forster says hunters even have to provide their own call. "Here kitty, kitty, kitty, kitty….That's the come back call."

Forster says the Wisconsin Domestic Cat Call comes with a cookbook and more. "We provide the official cat bait now, which is no more than Alaskan salmon."

Forster says he's been advertising in the classifieds and the phones have been ringing off the hook. "As a whole the majority of the calls we've been getting have been very supportive of the product. People see the humor in it."

Governor Doyle doesn't like all the feral cat attention. "What it does is hold us up as a state that everybody is laughing at right now."

But Forster would say he's trying to laugh with us.
