Rising to the Challenge

A group of Madison high school students is hitting the books a little harder right now, and they prepare for their ultimate "challenge".

The Madison East High School students are practicing for the annual History Challenge Bowl in May. The event is sponsored by the 100 Black Men of Madison organization and involves separate middle and high school competitions. Students from four Madison area schools will show what they know on the topic of African American history.

Last year, East High School's Challenge Bowl team competed in the national finals competition, in Miami.

The team practices twice a week…for two-and-a-half hours…as they seek to claim this year's national title.

It's really fun," says East High student Maya Williams. "it's not like another class in school. It's like an extracurricular activity, it's just as fun as anything else."

The History Challenge Bowl takes place Saturday, May 7th, at 9:00 AM in the Madison Metropolitan School District's Doyle Administration Building.
