Highway 12 Construction Update

Duane Miller has only lived along the Highway 12 construction project for a few months, but he says that's long enough.

"I moved in here ‘cuz I wanted to get out in the country, but as far as traffic-wise, it's a nightmare."

Now, one of the area's newest residents joins a chorus of others who voice their concerns regarding a recent work stoppage on the $23 million project.

According to Don Greuel of the state's Department of Transportation, the company responsible for the project's paving and grading, Racine-based Cape Construction ceased operations in mid-March and in mid-project.

Greuel says, "Cape was a large company, did a lotta work for us, and never to this degree have that the department had to go through this."

Although Cape may have come to the end of its road, still the department can't let go of its hope that the $12 to $13 million worth of work remaining here on Highway 12 can be completed on schedule.

Greuel says, "Be patient; there's still all summer to get this work done. We still anticipate to get the work road open to four lanes from Middleton to Sauk City by the end of this year."

Greuel says Cape's bonding company Federal Insurance Company is now responsible to complete Cape's contracts on the same terms.

"They're still trying to find a contractor to take over and we're waiting for it; we're anxiously waiting for it."

But, Greuel adds if a contractor is not found within the next two weeks, the state may be forced to exercise its option to find one on its own.

“Whatever it takes,” says Miller. "The way I look at it now is that as long as it gets done. I mean, it's like any business, I mean, they gotta do what they need to do to get it done."

There will be a late update to this story tonight as Greuel relays word from the Federal Insurance Company, which claims it is close to securing another contractor, adding a deal could come as soon as early next week.
