Some UW Madison students who protested last week took their concerns about military recruiters on campus directly to the school's chancellor Wednesday. They gathered for a public forum.
Students from “Stop the War” want military recruiters and ROTC programs barred from campus saying the military discriminates against gays and targets minorities. Paul Pryse says, "The military is a government institution. The first amendment was never intended to protect government institution from the people, it's meant to do exact opposite.
But, Chancellor John Wiley says campus is a place to hear all kinds of viewpoints, whether students support them or not. "I find it frankly condescending and insulting to assert that the military is so deceptive you can figure out what deception they're engaged in and the other students can't; they need your help to protect them from themselves."
The forum comes after some students held a walk out of class last week in protest of military recruiters on campus. The University also reports a federal law allows the government to deny funding to schools that ban military recruiting on campus.
