Law enforcement officials hope a new traffic team will be the key to reducing highway fatalities.
The Dane County Traffic Team is just in its beginning stages. Thursday night, officials began gathering information and opinions on how to improve traffic enforcement in the county.
Local leaders and law enforcement officials are helping identify the trouble spots, frequent violations, and traffic volume issues.
Sheriff Gary Hamblin says communication with smaller communities is necessary to make the Traffic Team work. "They're the ones that are on the front lines. You hear the complaints from their constituents day in and day out, and we want to work with them to help identify the problem areas in their respective townships, and hopefully we'll be able to then bring our traffic enforcement to bare on those problems."
The sheriff's department will be putting their traffic enforcement plan into action starting June first.
