Mayor Says Madison Could be a Target

Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz says Madison may not be the biggest city on the map… but it can still play a major role in keeping the world safe.

This afternoon, the mayor gave a briefing on his recent trip to New York, where he attended the international “Mayors for Peace” conference.

Cieslewicz says there are several reasons why the peace conference is important to the city of Madison. Most important among them, cities like Madison are targets for terrorism and continued nuclear arsenals.

“Those nuclear arsenals are still on a hair trigger," Cieslewicz says. "So even though tensions between superpowers, or former superpowers have diminished somewhat, the nuclear arsenals are still trained on our cities.”

Cieslewicz says there's still a growing threat of terrorism, adding if a terror group gets hold of a nuclear weapon, it won't be used in a cornfield, But a city.
