Bush Targets Younger Generation of Retirees

Video will be available shortly.

The President comes to Wisconsin Thursday to push for changes in the social security system.

Speaking to a crowd in Milwaukee, President Bush says allowing people to invest some of their social security payroll taxes will help save the program for future generations.

He wants younger retirees to be able to divert some of their payroll taxes into private investment accounts. But, some public opinion polls show little support for the idea.

Bush says, "If you're a senior you have nothing to worry about, because we've got plenty of money for you. But if you're a young worker, a young entrepreneur, a young mom paying into the system, you're paying into a bankrupt system, unless the United States Congress decides to act."

Sen. Herb Kohl (D-Wisconsin) isn't convinced the President's plan will solve the problem. "The Presidents program of social security reform really ends the program as we know it. If would cause guaranteed benefits to be cut hugely. It would create the vagaries of the market for people's savings."

Protesters gathered outside the building where the President spoke. No arrests reported.
