Bills Would Put Cold Medicine Behind Counter

Video will be available shortly.

The effort to eliminate methamphetamine production in Wisconsin could take a big step Tuesday.

Both houses of the state legislature are scheduled to vote on measures which would eliminate all products containing any trace of pseudoephedrine from store shelves. These products would, instead, be offered only by pharmacists.

Pseudoephedrine is a key component in methamphetamine production.
Proponents of the bill say similar legislation has produced significant drops in meth lab operations, but some argue the measure is too broad.

"It's gotten outta control," says Brandon Scholz, president of the Wisconsin Grocer's Association. "It's like if you were to say, 'Well, the lake is polluted—let's drain the lake, that's the solution.' Their solution is 'Let's take everything off the shelves if it's got a little bit of psuedoephedrine in it'.”

Pseudoephedrine is contained in products such as Sudafed, Tylenol Cold, and Advil Cold.
