Bones Found on Hospital Construction Site

Video will be available shortly.

The St. Mary’s expansion project had a bit of a delay this week when construction crews uncovered some human bones.

Crews came across the remains Tuesday and alerted the Wisconsin Historical Society which determined they were indeed human remains.

The discovery was unexpected but not all that surprising. The St. Mary’s site was originally used as a catholic cemetery.

Sarah Carlson, the public information director for St. Mary’s says, "They say it is likely that that individual was left behind accidentally when the Old Catholic Cemetery was moved from this location back in the 1860s or 1870s. So it’s been there a long time as far as they can tell."

The bones are European American in origin. The Historical Society will be studying them closer next week. They also hope to eventually be able to determine the person's identity.
