They went from being the Marquette Warriors to the Marquette Golden Eagles to the Marquette Gold.

Mary Haugh, of Madison's Diamond Center jewelry store, says, "Gold is great. It's withstood the test of time, it'll be around forever."

Or for about a week. While Diamond Center's stuff may stick around today Marquette University continues its controversy, scrapping the Gold, and asking for help.

"I think it was good that they came back on their word and kind of realized that they did make a bad decision without consulting people," says Amber Jaeger, a UW-Madison student.

Now, Marquette's Board of Trustees is set to begin enlisting the services of its more than 100 thousand alums, 11 thousand students, and 200 employees to determine a name once and for all via internet vote.

Early ideas include the Seashells and Balloons, the Interchangers, and a coupla of savory suggestions.

The Marquette French Friars? The Marquette Golden Chickens? I don't know how politically correct they are, but they certainly get my vote as the two most delicious names.

"I think restaurants oughtta be left alone, let them do their thing, and let sports teams and basketball do their thing," says Kipp Thomas, of Madison's "Kipp's American Rotisserie" restaurant.

What'll they come up with next, the golden kegs? (It's one of the suggestions.) Are you serious?

"I think we've found that at institutions of this size that athletics is the front porch, a lot of times for people to stay connected to their institution," says Steve Malchow, of the UW's Athletic Communications, who also suggests a nickname and mascot the public can embrace.

And who wouldn't embrace a Badger Trapper?

Not UW Senior Matt Howards, who says Badger Trappers? I don't think that's a good idea."

Steve?

"We welcome the competition."

The university’s Board of Trustees hopes to have a new nickname in place by July 1, when the school joins the Big East Athletic Conference.
