Memorial Day weekend signals the unofficial start of the summer, and it sounds like many people are ready for vacation.

"Memorial Day is predominately an auto travel holiday," says Michael Bie of AAA Wisconsin, "84% of the travelers this weekend will be doing so by motor vehicle."

Although consumers will pump record high gas this Memorial Day weekend, AAA Wisconsin predicts the state will also see a record number of travelers.

"Our projections show this could be the busiest Memorial Day holiday in history, an increase over last year which was a record setter," says Bie.

Many area residents who are preparing for their weekend getaways say the gas prices won't dictate their plans.

But others say the high price at the pump is the main reason they're staying put.

There are some things you can do to ensure that you're getting your money's worth out of you car:

"Some of the things people can do at home is check their tire pressure, check their air filter and check their routine maintenance on their car," says Jiffy Lube District Manager Sue Denton.

Wisconsin isn't the only place expecting an increase in travelers.
The Federal Aviation Administration is expecting the busiest air travel season yet.

That means you better prepare for some congestion if you're flying the friendly skies or hitting the road this summer.
