Wisconsin's Minimum Wage Increases June 1st

Wisconsin's minimum wage workers are about to get a raise.

Starting next Wednesday, June 1st, the state's minimum wage is increasing to $5.70 an hour.

The move comes after Governor Doyle issued an emergency rule earlier this month, requesting that the Department of Workforce Development increase the wage for the first time since 1997.

The Governor said if Republican lawmakers agree not to block the statewide increase, he will sign a preemption bill that would prohibit local governments from implementing their own.

In January, Madison became the first Wisconsin city to raise its minimum wage.

As part of the rule, the wage will raise again next year to $6.50 an hour.
