Residents in both Madison and Sun Prairie gather today to honor the memory of two fallen soldiers.

The funeral service for Army Corporal Mark Maida was held at St. Maria Goretti in Madison.
Maida was killed in Iraq on Thursday when his Humvee struck a homemade bomb about 40 miles south of Baghdad.

Maida's girlfriend, Betsy Jacobs says he joined the army because he wanted to help people, "even while he was deployed in Iraq he said, 'I don't know why I'm here right now, but I know there is a reason. I haven't figured it out yet. But even if its to make one person smile, then so be it."

Maida is survived by his father, mother, two brothers and a sister.
He had been accepted to Madison Area Technical College but his duty in Iraq was extended beyond his initial discharge date.

Meanwhile, a funeral service for Army Chief Warrant Officer Joshua Scott was held at Bristol Lutheran Church.

Scott was killed when his helicopter was shot down over central Iraq last week.
Friend and fellow officer Michael Rutledge says Scott was an excellent soldier who gave his life for a cause he deeply believed in.

Chief Warrant Officer, Michael Rutledge says, "he perished doing exactly what he'd always wanted to do and I think any man would be proud to go in the manner that he did."

Scott leaves behind a wife and three children.
He was awarded numerous medals and promotions during his decade–long career.
